ZDF Studios has acquired worldwide distribution rights (excluding French-speaking territories and Australia) for the fourth season of the documentary series Ancient Superstructures.
Ancient Superstructures is produced by Pernel Media in association with RMC Découverte, Histoire, SBS and ZDF Studios. Season four is scheduled for completion in Spring 2026.
The new installment will explore iconic landmarks including the Acropolis of Athens (Greece), Neuschwanstein Castle (Germany), Pierrefonds Castle and the medieval city of Carcassonne (France).
A major highlight of the season focuses on the Sagrada Familia. The production team has been granted exclusive access to film the placement of the final stone on the basilica’s main structure.
This historic moment, set to take place in June 2026, coincides with the centenary of architect Antoni Gaudi’s death and the official inauguration of the Tower of Jesus Christ. Upon reaching a height of 172.5 meters, the basilica will become the tallest church in the world.
While the main structure and its 18 towers are expected to be completed in 2026, additional decorative work on the Glory Façade is scheduled to continue through 2034.
Ancient Superstructures combines high-end CGI technology with scientific analysis to uncover the engineering secrets behind some of the world’s most remarkable historic structures.
