Nearly six decades after De Fabeltjeskrant first introduced audiences to the Great Animal Forest, the Dutch children’s classic is getting a new animated series.
Robin de Levita Productions and Monks will present Daily Fable News, a new 26×11-minute series inspired by the original property, to international buyers for the first time at MIPCOM 2026. The series will also be available through the MIPJUNIOR Screening Library.
Created primarily for children aged 6-12, Daily Fable News brings back Mister Owl and the inhabitants of the Great Animal Forest in a contemporary setting while retaining the warmth and humour associated with the original series.
Daily Fable News Marks Mister Owl’s Return to the Great Animal Forest
The new series revolves around a news broadcast run by the animals themselves, with Mister Owl serving as newsreader, narrator and guide. Each episode explores a new situation in the forest, as the characters attempt to produce their own local news programme.
Technical problems, misunderstandings and everyday mishaps drive stories about friendship, cooperation, acceptance and problem-solving. Early episodes include the forest’s first live news broadcast, a holiday taken by the Beaver Brothers, Zoof unexpectedly taking charge and a fitness trend spreading among the animals.
First broadcast in 1968, De Fabeltjeskrant produced 1,612 original episodes and was broadcast in 40 countries. The new series builds on the property’s central idea of a diverse community learning to live together, while introducing a new visual identity.
Rather than recreating the original look, Daily Fable News combines contemporary animation technology with a warm, textured aesthetic designed to retain the handcrafted feel of the classic series.
Robin de Levita serves as writer and creative director, with Patrick Bremmers as writer, Michael Knobloch as executive producer, Ruud Jan Bos as composer, Cas de Brouwer as animation producer, Vincent van de Wetering as creative development lead and Declan Byrne as animation director.
The launch follows the return of the original De Fabeltjeskrant through restored episodes on its official YouTube channel, introducing the classic property to a new digital audience. Daily Fable News now takes the franchise into a new era with its first international presentation at MIPCOM 2026.
Robin de Levita said: “The world has changed enormously since 1968, but people haven’t. The stories of the Great Animal Forest are perhaps even more relevant today than ever before. The Great Animal Forest has always held up a gentle and humorous mirror to the world around us. With Daily Fable News, we are creating new stories for today’s children, building on the unique qualities of the original series. Its unforgettable characters, humour and warmth remind us that, however different we may be, we can always find a way to live together.”
