Focus Features has unveiled the first trailer for Elsinore, Simon Stone’s upcoming biographical drama starring Andrew Scott as acclaimed Scottish actor Ian Charleson.
Written by Stephen Beresford, the film explores the final chapter of Charleson’s life and his acclaimed performance as Hamlet at London’s National Theatre while he was privately facing the complications of AIDS. Elsinore will be released in U.S. theaters on November 20.
Andrew Scott Leads the Cast
Charleson, best known for Chariots of Fire, took over the role of Hamlet after Daniel Day-Lewis unexpectedly left the National Theatre production during a performance. Despite his worsening health, Charleson continued with the production before stepping down. He died seven weeks later.
The film follows the actor as he confronts his mortality while preparing for one of the defining performances of his career. According to the film’s official synopsis, Charleson’s approach to his final challenge becomes a source of inspiration and healing for those around him.
Elsinore premiered at the Telluride Film Festival before screening at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it received the International People’s Choice Award.
Alongside Scott, the cast includes Olivia Colman, Billie Piper, Johnny Flynn, Luke Thompson, David Dawson, Matthew Beard, Joe Locke, Monica Dolan, Georgie Glen, Sadie Soverall, Adeel Akhtar, Dickie Beau, Kadiff Kirwan, Juliet Stevenson and Peter Mullan.
The newly released trailer offers a first look at Scott’s portrayal of Charleson and the emotional journey at the centre of the film.
