Apple has acquired the full intellectual property and all rights to the psychological sci-fi series Severance from producer Fifth Season.
The deal is reportedly valued at approximately $70 million. Future seasons will now be produced by Apple’s in-house production arm, Apple Studios. The series officially joins the Apple Studios portfolio.
Starring Adam Scott, Severance follows employees at a mysterious company who undergo a surgical procedure that separates their work memories from their personal lives. Two seasons have been released to date, with the show receiving strong critical acclaim and solid audience response.
Reports suggest the series carries a production cost of up to $20 million per episode, placing a significant financial strain on Fifth Season.
Apple has already greenlit a third season and is reportedly planning a fourth, which is expected to serve as the final installment.
