Acun Ilıcalı Becomes Partner of German Sports Channel
Television producer Acun Ilıcalı is preparing to become a partner in one of Germany’s largest sports channels. According to Deutsche Welle Turkish, Ilıcalı, owner of Acun Medya, will buy 50 percent of the shares of the Sport1 channel.
According to the deal officially announced by Swiss media group Highlight Communications, the sole owner of the channel before the sale, Acun Medya will pay 30 million euros for a 50 percent stake in Sport1.
Reuters reported that Acun Medya’s sports-related reality formats will also be broadcast on Sport1. According to the agency, the first sports reality programme content to be adapted to Sport1 channel will be the Exathlon programme. Exathlon is a reality programme in which two teams compete against each other in various physical activities.
However, the sale of Sport1 shares to Acun Medya has not yet been approved by competition and media regulators.
ACUN ILICALI ALSO OWNS HULL CITY
Acun Ilıcalı is known for his interest in sports branches, especially football. In January 2022, Ilıcalı and Acun Medya bought Hull City, a club in the Championship, England’s second league, which had previously competed in the Premier League. Ilıcalı owns all of Hull City’s shares.
Meanwhile, EXXEN, the digital platform of Acun Medya, owns the broadcasting rights of UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League matches.
