Disney’s 2016 animated hit Moana is getting a live-action remake, set to hit theaters worldwide on July 10, 2026.
Directed by Hamilton Tony winner Thomas Kail, the film stars Catherine Laga’aia as Moana, bringing to life the character originally voiced by Auli’i Cravalho in the animation. Dwayne Johnson returns as the demigod Maui, complete with a custom wig and tattooed costume designed for the live-action adaptation.
The cast also includes John Tui as Chief Tui (Moana’s father), Frankie Adams as Sina (her mother), and Rena Owen as the wise Gramma Tala. The story follows Moana as she ventures beyond the reef of Motunui for the first time and embarks on an unforgettable journey with Maui to restore prosperity to her people.

The film features original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foaʻi, and Mark Mancina, with Mancina also composing the score. Producers include Dwayne Johnson, Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The live-action version reimagines the beloved animation’s stunning ocean scenes and fantastical elements with real sets and advanced visual effects, offering audiences a fresh experience while honoring the charm and spirit of the original film.
