Netflix has announced its upcoming animated feature Steps, offering a fresh twist on the classic fairy tale Cinderella by shifting the focus to her so-called “evil” stepsisters.

At the center of the story is Lilith, a misunderstood outsider voiced by Ali Wong, whose actions set off a chain of magical chaos when she accidentally turns her sister into a frog with a stolen wand. Forced to confront the consequences, Lilith teams up with Cinderella to restore order to the kingdom, leading to an unexpected journey that challenges long-held perceptions of heroism and villainy.
Blending humor, fantasy and emotional depth, the film explores themes of belonging, sisterhood and identity, reframing the narrative around characters who have traditionally been cast as antagonists. The voice cast also includes Stephanie Hsu and Amanda Seyfried, while the film is directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, with Amy Poehler among the producers.
Steps is set to premiere on Netflix in 2026.
