The 90s family classic Casper is set to haunt screens once again with a modern twist, marking a major return for the friendly ghost under the guidance of Steven Spielberg.
The legendary director, who produced the groundbreaking 1995 original, is back as an executive producer for this new live-action Casper series developed for Disney+. Following a “very competitive” five-way bidding war between major streaming platforms, Disney+ secured the rights to adapt the character for a new generation. In a nostalgic surprise for fans, Christina Ricci, who starred as Kat in the original Casper film, is also joining the project, though this time she will be contributing behind the scenes as an executive producer.

The creative team is led by director Rob Letterman, known for his work on Goosebumps, who will write the script alongside Hilary Winston. This upcoming iteration is described as a “modern update” on the classic ghost story that first originated in the 1940s, aiming to honor the character’s roots while utilizing today’s advanced storytelling techniques.
Building on the heritage of the 1995 film, which made history as the first feature to star a fully CGI lead character, the new series is expected to push the boundaries of visual effects and digital artistry once again.
