Japanese media giant Fuji TV has officially launched its global expansion by introducing its innovative vertical short-form drama app, FOD SHORT, to the North American market.
Following its initial release in Japan in July 2025, the platform experienced rapid growth, becoming the country’s number one short drama publisher in both downloads and revenue by December 2025 according to Sensor Tower data.
As of April 15, 2026, the service is available to audiences in the United States and Canada, marking a strategic first step in Fuji TV’s vision to reach over 100 countries and regions while establishing a worldwide infrastructure for Japanese content.
Developed as a joint venture with FUJI NEXTERA LABO INC., a specialist in AI and video streaming technologies, FOD SHORT currently offers 39 original titles, all featuring English subtitles. With plans to support more than 10 languages and integrate content from external partners in the future, the platform’s mission is to bring the unique emotional depth of Japanese dramas and the passion of its creative talents directly to a global audience through a “short yet unforgettable” viewing experience.
Tomoko Sugisaki, Senior Director, Fuji TV On Demand, Platforms, Content Business Department, Fuji Television Network, Inc.) said: “We are delighted to launch FOD SHORT in North America, building on the expertise and achievements we have cultivated in the Japanese market. We strongly believe that the unique appeal of Japanese dramas—capable of moving audiences deeply even within a short duration—will resonate with viewers overseas. This initiative goes far beyond a simple international expansion of a Fuji TV business. It is a challenge to create a Japan-originated global infrastructure that can deliver the exceptional IP of Japan, along with the passion and talent of its creators, directly to the global market.”
