The first trailer for Robert Eggers’ upcoming folk horror film Werwulf has been released, marking the filmmaker’s return to the genre following his gothic horror hit Nosferatu.
Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp, the film is set in 13th-century England and follows a farmer whose life is upended by a supernatural curse. Taylor-Johnson’s character is forced to confront a mysterious connection to a bloodthirsty werewolf that dates back to his childhood.
Depp plays the farmer’s wife, with the new trailer offering a closer look at her character’s prosthetic cleft lip. When first-look images were released in 2025, some media coverage drew criticism for describing her appearance in ways that campaigners argued reinforced harmful stereotypes about people with cleft lips.

UK charity Changing Faces subsequently called on media outlets to adopt more respectful and responsible language when reporting on the character’s appearance. While the new trailer provides a better look at Depp’s role, it still leaves unanswered questions about how the film will portray the facial difference.
Co-written by Eggers and Icelandic poet and screenwriter Sjón, Werwulf also stars Willem Dafoe, Ralph Ineson and Bodhi Rae Breathnach.
Werwulf is set to open in cinemas on December 25, 2026.
