Fans of the beloved BBC sitcom Ghosts have reason to rejoice: the show is returning, but this time as a feature film titled Ghosts: The Possession of Button House.
The original series, which aired from 2019 to 2023 for five seasons, followed Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) and Alison Cooper (Charlotte Ritchie) as they moved into the haunted Button House, discovering a cast of quirky ghosts from different eras. The series was praised for its heartwarming humor, clever writing, and endearing characters that made it one of the UK’s favorite sitcoms.
Excitement among fans recently surged after several of the series’ stars shared cryptic posts and videos on social media, hinting at a possible return. Fans immediately began speculating, sharing messages like “What is the meaning of this?” and “Please say it’s Ghosts the movie!”, proving just how much the show has been missed.
Original cast members and co-writers Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard, and Ben Willbond will reprise their roles in the film, alongside stars Kiell Smith-Bynoe, Charlotte Ritchie, and Lolly Adefope. Simon Hynd, who directed the fourth and fifth seasons as well as the Christmas specials, returns as director, while producers Alison Owen, Debra Hayward, and Alison Carpenter oversee the production.
Eva Yates, Director of BBC Film, said: “At BBC, we are thrilled to bring back our beloved Ghosts for a hilarious cinematic adventure, giving both longtime fans and new viewers the chance to enjoy this heartwarming comedy on the big screen.”
Filming is set to begin next month on location at West Horsley Place and the surrounding Surrey area, and the story promises to introduce new characters while exploring themes of life, death, and friendship.
