In December, 47.5% of total TV viewing time in the US came from streaming platforms, marking an all-time high according to Nielsen’s The Gauge.
On Christmas Day, platforms set a new daily viewing record with 55.1 billion minutes watched. Back-to-back NFL games on Netflix, Prime Video’s NFL coverage, and the release of new Stranger Things episodes were major drivers of this surge.
Streaming surpassed 50% of total TV usage twice in December, a first in U.S. television history.
Netflix, Prime Video, The Roku Channel, and Paramount Streaming all achieved record-high monthly viewership.
In comparison, traditional broadcast TV accounted for 21.4% of viewing, while cable represented 20.2%.
Cable sports viewership increased by 16%, with NFL games ranking as the most-watched cable programs of the month.
