European production and distribution giant Studiocanal has signed a long-term strategic theatrical distribution partnership with Sun Africa Group (SAG), a member of the Telefilms Group, targeting the South African market.
Under this three-year agreement, SAG will handle the theatrical distribution of Studiocanal’s extensive slate of English-language feature films in South Africa. This robust pipeline will include animation titles, releases from Studiocanal’s genre label 6th Dimension, and select local South African productions developed in collaboration with M-Net.
The first high-profile title to debut under this partnership will be the thriller Pressure, directed by Anthony Maras and starring Andrew Scott, Brendan Fraser, and Kerry Condon. The upcoming theatrical lineup also features notable projects such as Danny Boyle’s Ink, along with Elsinore, Full Phil, The Custom of the Country, and Sean Byrne’s The Mannequin.
This collaboration strengthens the long-term growth ambitions of both CANAL+ and Studiocanal across the African continent, while creating a strong synergy with the upcoming film The Road Home. Directed by Academy Award-winner Bill Condon and starring Cynthia Erivo, The Road Home is scheduled to begin filming in South Africa at the end of June.
Studiocanal CEO Anna Marsh noted that this partnership marks an exciting new chapter for global distribution, offering a prime opportunity to bring a bold international slate to South African audiences while simultaneously elevating local storytelling onto the global stage. Expressing similar enthusiasm, Sun Africa Group CEO Debbie McCrum emphasized that leveraging their distribution expertise and extensive theatrical reach will ensure these high-quality films are experienced exactly as they were meant to be—on the big screen.
