Four-time Emmy nominee Liz Meriwether, widely known for creating hit shows like New Girl and The Dropout, has been officially tapped to pen the first draft of the screenplay for Universal Pictures’ highly anticipated Britney Spears biopic.
The film is based on Britney Spears’s record-breaking memoir, The Woman in Me, the rights to which were fiercely secured by the studio back in August 2024. This high-profile cinematic adaptation is being steered by a powerhouse creative team, with acclaimed director Jon M. Chu (Wicked) at the helm and seasoned producer Marc Platt leading the production.
At its core, the movie will chronicling the deeply personal and public journey of the Mississippi native, mapping out the dramatic rise, fall, and ultimate resilience of a pop icon who went on to sell nearly 150 million records worldwide.
The source material itself carries immense cultural weight, as The Woman in Me became the fastest-selling memoir in Simon & Schuster’s history with over 6 million copies sold globally—a monumental success that followed Spears’s blockbuster $15 million book deal signed back in 2022.
