A new analysis from Luminate reveals that women-led series account for just 11% of streaming premieres but generate 17% of total U.S. streaming minutes, highlighting a significant gap between content supply and audience demand.
Covering series released from 2025 through the third quarter of 2026, the research suggests that female-centered storytelling remains underrepresented on streaming platforms despite attracting a disproportionate share of viewership. Serialized dramas, thrillers, and literary adaptations emerged as particularly strong categories.
Which Women-Led Series Are Driving Streaming Demand?
Serialized dramas stood out in Luminate’s findings, representing approximately one-third of women-led series while generating 44% of viewing minutes. Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, its most-streamed title in 2025, and Furious were among the notable examples of strong audience engagement with female-centered dramas.
Thrillers also demonstrated a notable gap between availability and demand. While the genre accounted for 13% of women-centered releases, it captured 24% of streaming minutes, suggesting significant audience interest beyond its current share of content.
Why Are Literary Adaptations Standing Out?
Literary adaptations recorded the largest supply-demand disparity in the analysis. Book-to-screen adaptations accounted for just 16% of available women-centered titles but generated 32% of their total streaming minutes.
Netflix’s Bridgerton and Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale contributed to the category’s strong performance, demonstrating the appeal of established literary properties among streaming audiences.
Amazon has also reorganized its television studio operations to strengthen its focus on young adult adaptations, reflecting continued industry interest in book-based storytelling.
According to Luminate, the findings highlight potential opportunities for streaming platforms and producers to invest in underserved genres, particularly as audience demand for women-led stories continues to exceed their share of available content.
