Prime Video has renewed Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s horror classic Carrie for a second season. The renewal will continue the story following the first season’s cliffhanger ending, which took a different direction from King’s original novel.
Starring Summer H. Howell as Carrie White, the series has made a strong debut on the platform. Carrie topped Prime Video’s weekly global TV series rankings in more than 105 countries. According to Nielsen, the show also recorded 1.26 billion minutes of viewing in the United States during its first full week.
Carrie’s Story Takes a Different Turn
The first season follows Carrie White, a socially isolated high school student who has grown up under the control of her fiercely protective mother, Margaret. After her father’s sudden death, Carrie enters public high school, where bullying and a viral scandal intensify the pressures surrounding her. As she struggles to navigate adolescence, mysterious telekinetic powers begin to emerge.
Flanagan’s adaptation departs from the ending of King’s novel. Rather than dying from a stabbing, Carrie survives the events of the season finale and leaves town in the passenger seat of her friend Emaline’s car. With her destination left unknown, the ending sets the stage for the next chapter of the story.
Mike Flanagan and Stephen King Tease What’s Next
Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios, said the series has connected with longtime Stephen King fans as well as a new generation of viewers, including young adult and international audiences. He also expressed enthusiasm for the direction Flanagan and King are planning to take the story.
Flanagan said the creative team had envisioned a narrative that would extend beyond the prom night events, adding that he was grateful for King’s trust and support in exploring what comes next. King also shared his excitement about the upcoming season.
The renewal announcement promises new revelations, major character developments and unexpected twists in Season 2. Howell is expected to return as Carrie, while other characters who survived the first season’s prom night massacre may also continue in the story.
Flanagan serves as writer, showrunner and executive producer, with King and Trevor Macy also executive producing. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios. A premiere date for Season 2 has not yet been announced.
