Starz has acquired the screen rights to the romantasy series The Wolf King and has officially moved the project into development.
The adaptation is based on Lauren Palphreyman’s interconnected book universe, with the streamer also optioning additional titles in the series, including The Night Prince and The Wolf Queen, signaling plans to potentially build a wider franchise around the property.
At the center of The Wolf King is a kidnapped princess who is taken by a brooding werewolf and pulled into a brutal conflict between humanity and a world of feral, supernatural forces. The narrative blends romance, fantasy, and darker war-driven themes, positioning it within the growing “romantasy” wave in television.
Tanya Saracho, best known for creating Starz’s Vida, is attached as showrunner and executive producer, bringing her experience in character-driven, emotionally layered storytelling to the adaptation. Lauren Palphreyman is also on board as an executive producer, maintaining a creative link to the original source material.
Starz executives have highlighted The Wolf King‘s strong potential for “emotional intensity, romance, and a dark fantastical world,” framing it as part of the network’s broader strategy to expand into high-concept genre storytelling with strong fan-driven IP. The series is currently in early development, with no release date announced yet.
