Amazon MGM Studios is officially moving forward with the film adaptation of Rebecca Serle’s bestselling novel Expiration Dates, tapping Laura Lekkos to pen the screenplay and Emma Roberts to star.
Lekkos, who recently wrote the Prime Video hit Relationship Goals and is set to release her debut novel All the Little Ways this June, brings a proven track record in the romance genre to this high-concept project.
The story follows a woman who receives mysterious slips of paper from the universe detailing the exact “expiration date” of every relationship she starts. However, when she meets a man who defies this predetermined timeline, she begins to question the very nature of her fate.
Emma Roberts is set to star in the leading role and will also serve as a producer through her company, Belletrist, alongside partner Karah Preiss. This project further solidifies Rebecca Serle’s status as a Hollywood favorite, with her other major works like One Italian Summer, In Five Years, and Once and Again already in development at Paramount, New Line, and Apple, respectively.
As Amazon MGM Studios continues to capitalize on the recent resurgence of romantic comedies, this collaboration between Serle and Emma Roberts aims to deliver a sophisticated and “high-concept” blend of romance and drama that resonates with modern audiences’ fascination with destiny and choice.
