20th Century Studios has officially launched development on a major feature film adaptation of the legendary Choose Your Own Adventure gamebook series.
First debuting in 1979, the cultural phenomenon famously invited readers to become the heroes of their own stories, allowing them to make critical decisions that shaped the narrative path and final outcome of their journey.
The project will be helmed by the acclaimed filmmaking duo Radio Silence, comprised of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who are celebrated for their work on hit genre films such as Ready or Not, the 2022 Scream reboot, and Abigail. They are set to both direct and produce the feature.
Choose Your Own Adventure film’s script will be written by Tom Bissell, an award-winning writer known for his work on projects like Andor and The Disaster Artist. Bissell’s extensive experience in both film and interactive storytelling, including his significant contributions to video game narrative design, makes him a particularly fitting choice for a project built on branching possibilities.
The original book series stands as one of the most successful children’s literature franchises of all time, boasting more than 250 million copies sold worldwide and translations in 38 languages. Its enduring influence is perhaps most recognizable in the modern era through Netflix’s Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, which brought this interactive framework into the mainstream.
While plot details for the film remain under wraps, there is significant industry anticipation surrounding how Radio Silence’s signature kinetic style and Bissell’s mastery of complex, interactive structures will successfully translate the unique Choose Your Own Adventure spirit to the cinematic big screen.
