Cengizhan Özcan looked at Hande Erçel for our August issue.

Everyone knows Hande Erçel. But between knowing and recognizing, there is still quite a long distance. What is familiar to us is generally what is seen on screens, magazine covers, red carpets, a red dress spoken about for days, a character played and discussed for days. Her face, her voice, her smile… Yet the real story of Hande Erçel perhaps does not begin where everyone looks at her, but in the moments when no one is looking. In childhood, in those silent years, in the relationships she established throughout her life and in the gaze that changes over time… This time, we will try to look at her a little more closely, a little more from within.

FIRST TRACES

A person’s story, most of the time, does not begin on the day their name is heard for the first time. The real story is quietly shaped in the years when no one knows them. The city in which they grow up, the values they receive from their family, the dreams they establish in childhood and the first difficulties they encounter form the invisible foundation of the life they will build in the future.

When Hande Erçel’s life is looked at through this window, what appears before us is not a face recognized from screens, but a journey whose step by step has been laid down. Her life, which began in the Bandırma district of Balıkesir, was shaped at a distance from the speed of big cities, in a more calm environment. This period formed the basis of the family ties and sense of belonging that she frequently emphasizes today as well. What she tells in her interviews about her childhood shows that those silent years long before fame still hold an important place in her life.

Her becoming interested in art at a young age was also one of the important parts of these foundations. Receiving fine arts education shows that the relationship she established with aesthetics was not a professional obligation but a freedom. Turning toward painting, producing and forms of visual expression was a silent preparation for the world she would later establish in front of the camera. Even though acting was not yet at the center of her life, the bond she established with visual narration had begun to take shape much earlier.

Life sometimes changes direction with a single decision. Her participation in a beauty contest was also the first step of this break. However, when looked back upon, it is incomplete to see this moment as a beginning. Because opportunities may knock on the door; how you pass through that door is related to your character.

The first years of Hande Erçel were the herald of a period in which she happened to pass in front of the lens, but permanence began to be established with effort. Perhaps, in order to understand the Hande Erçel we see on screen today, it is first necessary to return to those silent beginnings. Because a person’s life is often hidden not where they are most visible, but in the first traces that no one yet looks at.

BREAKING POINT

The moments that change a career often look like a single event when viewed from the outside. Whereas every breaking point is the result of small decisions made before it and patience shown. Hande Erçel’s journey is also the story of a process in which visibility gradually turned into responsibility rather than a sudden rise.

After her first television experiences, attracting the attention of broad audiences brought her, in a short time, into one of the most talked-about names on the screen. Popularity brought with it great visibility and a heavy expectation. The attention that comes at a young age also carried with it the obligation to prove oneself again in every new project.

Every role she took in this process was not only a new job added to her career, but at the same time an opportunity to change the perception formed about her. Alongside success, criticism also came. Her acting, role choices and appearance were frequently discussed on screen. But there was one point that drew attention within all these discussions: Hande Erçel chose to continue producing instead of experiencing her career as a single success. Because sometimes what determines an actor’s development is not the praise they receive, but the resistance they show in the face of criticism.

Hande Erçel: Beyond the Visible

In time, not only the productions in which she took part, but also her public stance began to transform. More selective projects, the desire to work with different creative teams and the increase in her international visibility opened the door to a new period in her career. This change meant not only becoming more recognized, but also reflected the effort to build her own professional identity more consciously.

There are moments in every actor’s career when applause changes direction. Sometimes a character, sometimes a brave decision made, or sometimes a waiting period passed through silently… Hande Erçel’s breaking point gains meaning exactly here. Because the main transformation in her story begins not on the day she started to be recognized, but at the moment when she decided what kind of artist she wanted to be beyond visibility.

BUILDING HER OWN LANGUAGE

In architecture, what makes a structure valuable is not only its load-bearing system. The place you enter, the light it receives, the voids it contains and the way the relationship it establishes with time is experienced are just as important. Human life is somewhat like this too. The beginning is similar for all of us; the real difference emerges in the language we establish within the years.

When Hande Erçel’s career is looked at from this perspective, the first thing that draws attention is that she forms a name that looks for her own aesthetic language more than an actor who constantly tries to change. This search can be felt not only in her role choices; but also in the relationship she establishes with art, in her public visibility and in her form of production. Because aesthetics is not only related to looking beautiful. Aesthetics is the choice of what to make visible.

Today’s actors do not exist only in front of the camera. The digital world transforms them into the art director of their own stories. A photograph shared, an interview or even a period passed silently becomes part of the personal narrative. Sometimes what remains outside the frame may be more important than what is inside it. This is perhaps one of the most difficult design problems of the new period.

The public identity Hande Erçel has created over time also carries an order that draws attention from this perspective. There is a field of narration in which fashion, art, visibility and simplicity touch each other instead of drawing definite lines between them. The relationship she establishes with painting can be read not as a stance made so that visual production exists, but as an extension of the way she perceives the world. Because a person describes themselves not only through the words they choose, but also through the instruments of expression they choose.

Hande Erçel: Beyond the Visible

There is a concept in architecture called “material honesty.” What is expected is that a structure does not hide the material it carries and shows it as it is. Perhaps there is a similar state for a person too. Over time, imitated characters begin to disappear and the real character begins to become visible. An actor’s real language emerges exactly at this point; to the extent that they can exist outside the characters they play, independently of them, in their own stance.

Perhaps Hande Erçel’s most important work that is still incomplete is not her career; it is this personal language that she has continued to build within the years. Because some structures are not finished, they are experienced; they age, they change, they gain meaning. Some people, too, find their own voices only when time, experience and production come together.

THE TRACE LEFT BEHIND

Cultural history shows us this: What makes an artist permanent is not only their successes. What is really decisive is the relationship they establish with the spirit of the period they live in and the mark they leave on that period. Some are remembered with their characters, some with a scene, and some with the narrative they build over time.

Hande Erçel’s story is not fully completed yet. Perhaps what makes her interesting is exactly this. Like a text that is still being written, each new project, each creative collaboration and each choice adds a new layer to this narrative. However, completed structures begin to live lives independent of their architects.

A good structure in architecture is not one that impresses at first glance, but one that gains meaning as years pass. Seasons change, light falls from different angles, users change, but the structure offers a new reading every time. An actor’s career also carries a similar temporality. What determines permanence is not the first impression, but the integrity produced over the years that can remain alive.

When we look at Hande Erçel today, we see one of the most visible names of popular culture. But beyond this visibility, there is an artist profile who is looking for her own aesthetic language, who continues to produce and who is preparing to pass through time. She may not be able to determine today how she will be remembered ten years from now. What will determine her real legacy will not be today’s success, but the cultural trace she leaves behind when looked back after years.

Perhaps every life, just like a well-designed structure, gains meaning on the day its function changes, when people begin to live inside it. And in actors, meaning exists not only in the characters they bring to life, but in the life language they establish.

And perhaps the real question of the Designed Lives series is this: What does a person leave behind?

Because in the end, all of us are evaluated by the same measure; not by how much we are seen, but by what kind of trace we leave behind.
