The creators and showrunners of The Empress, Robert and Katharina Eyssen, are reuniting with Netflix for a new project.
The upcoming series, currently titled Witches, will be a dark historical drama set during the 17th-century European witch hunts. The project is being produced by the Germany-based company Sommerhaus.
Development is already underway, with the series envisioned as one of the largest-scale productions ever to explore this period.
The story will center on three sisters in medieval Germany, unfolding against a backdrop of fear, fanaticism, accusations and betrayal. At its core, the drama will portray a family torn apart by hysteria and persecution. Thematically, the series will explore marginalization, oppression and resistance.
Netflix’s DACH (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) content team is backing the project.
Meanwhile, The Empress is set to conclude with its third and final season later this year. The new series marks a continuation of the Eyssens’ collaboration with Netflix following the success of the royal drama.
