Pop star and actress Halsey is solidifying her presence in the film industry with the buzzworthy new project Replacer, introduced at this year’s Cannes Market.
Taking on both the lead role and co-writing duties for this “psycho-sexual horror,” the pop star collaborates with director and co-writer Avan Jogia, while legendary Matrix co-creator Lilly Wachowski serves as executive producer. Set against the gritty backdrop of Montreal’s subculture, the story follows a troubled DJ named Proxy (Halsey) who joins an underground radio collective, only to face a terrifying survival struggle when a mysterious signal from deep within the city’s subway system begins transforming people into primal, unrecognizable entities.
Wachowski has described the script as a surreal blend of horror, thriller, and comedy, drawing inspiration from the works of David Cronenberg and John Carpenter. Both Halsey and Jogia have been present in Cannes to support the film’s launch and meet with international buyers.
For Halsey, who recently appeared in MaXXXine, this project marks a significant career milestone as it represents her debut as a screenwriter, further expanding her creative repertoire beyond her multi-Grammy-nominated music career.
