Netflix is undergoing a major leadership shake-up, with film chief Dan Lin leaving the company following the departure of Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria and a round of layoffs affecting approximately 1,000 employees. Former Disney executive Peter Rice is set to take charge of Netflix’s global content strategy on October 26.
Netflix Reshuffles Its Top Content Leadership
Netflix confirmed Dan Lin’s departure on October 19, marking the latest major change in the streamer’s senior ranks. His exit follows the announcement that Bela Bajaria is leaving her role as Chief Content Officer after nearly a decade with the company.
Rice, the former chairman of Walt Disney Television, will oversee Netflix’s global content operations and temporarily supervise the film division until a permanent successor to Lin is appointed.
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos thanked Lin for his contribution to the company’s film business, highlighting his approach to filmmaking, dealmaking and strategy.
Layoffs Affect Approximately 1,000 Employees
The executive departures follow the company’s decision to cut approximately 1,000 jobs, representing around 6% of its global workforce. The changes come as the streamer faces questions about audience engagement, growth and its ability to sustain momentum in an increasingly competitive entertainment market.
What’s Next for Netflix’s Film Strategy?
Lin joined the company in 2024 with a mandate to focus on fewer films with stronger creative and commercial prospects while maintaining tighter production budgets. During his tenure, the platform released titles including KPop Demon Hunters, Happy Gilmore 2 and The Rip.
The company’s approach to theatrical distribution is also drawing attention. The company has increasingly embraced cinema releases for selected titles, including upcoming projects such as Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew.
Rice’s arrival raises questions about the future direction of the company’s film division and its relationship with filmmakers. The streamer’s next challenge will be to strengthen its content strategy while finding new ways to sustain audience interest and growth.
