Viaplay Content Distribution has secured a major commercial milestone as its upcoming Swedish series Mafia lands broadcast and streaming deals across 41 international markets prior to its domestic premiere.
Reflecting a robust global demand for premium Nordic content, the lucrative six-part drama has been snapped up by a wide array of major broadcasters, including Bell Media (Canada), Canal+ (Netherlands), Filmin (Spain), TG4 (Ireland), HOT (Israel), BeTV (Benelux), Blue Entertainment (Switzerland), and RTL Voyo across the Balkans.
Backed by critical prestige, including a nod from The New York Times as one of the “Best International Shows of 2025”, Viaplay has also integrated the series into its premium Select partner schedules, expanding its commercial footprint to Magenta (Germany), Prima+ (Czech Republic), Vodafone (Greece), EITB (Basque Spain), LGU+ (South Korea), and Cindie (Latin America).
Set in 1990s Sweden and inspired by real events, Mafia charts the rise of Radovan “Jakov” Jakovic from small-time smuggler to feared crime boss, and the police officer determined to stop him. The series captures a pivotal period in Sweden’s history, as organised crime begins to take hold.
Starring Peshang Rad (Before We Die) and Katia Winter (The Boys, Sleepy Hollow), Mafia is directed by Mani Maserrat (Young Wallander) and Tomas Jonsgården (Game of Thrones: Aftermath), with writing by Axel Stjärne (Top Dog) and Stefan Thunberg (The Hunters).
“What’s particularly exciting about Mafia is the breadth of international demand we’ve seen,” says Vanda Rapti, EVP Viaplay Select & Content Distribution at Viaplay Group. “It reflects the enduring appeal of distinctive, character-driven storytelling rooted in authentic European histories and lived experiences, while still feeling universal and emotionally relatable to audiences globally”
